A cafe sits on the water's edge of the River Elbe in Övelgönne, a suburb of Hamburg. The port, ships and loading cranes of the harbour are on the far side of the river. More than 100 kilometres from the Elbe’s river mouth on the North Sea this is known as Germany's ‘Gateway to the World’, providing access for ship cargo to reach the Port of Hamburg, the country's largest seaport by volume.
