This historic picture was made at Doxfords Shipyard on the river Wear in Sunderland in December 1970 during the final weeks of their working life. It shows the 0-4-0 Crane Tank at work moving materials into the prefabrication shop in the shipyard. The design was introduced to Doxfords by Hawthorn Leslie in 1902 and all were named after districts of Sunderland. Doxfords were important Wearside shipbuilders since 1840 and were particularly noted for their special design of theTurret Ship with further examples from Robert Stephenson during World War Two.
