12/13/2001 – Gaby Alarcon who works at La Petite Academy, a day care facility in Santa Clarita, is surrounded by a group of toddlers who produce quite a few dirty diapers throughout the day. In the coming months, the city of Santa Clarita will begin a pilot program to recycle dirty diapers, the first program of its kind in the United States. Councilman Cameron Smyth said it's an important test for the recycling of disposable diapers, which take a long time to decompose in landfills. And with its abundance of young families, Santa Clarita, he said, is the perfect place to try the councept out: ''This place is a baby factory, man.''
