(Original Caption) California Pioneer Turns First Spade of Earth For Huge 'Frisco Bridge. San Francisco, Calif.: Laura Hester Phelps, 94-year old California Pioneer holding the shovel with which she turned one of the first spade-fulls of earth to symbolize the start of work on the $75,000,000 bridge which will span Oakland Bay from San Francisco. The bridge will be the longest in the world, and the engineering project is called one of the most intricate since the completion of the Panama Canal. Mis Phelps is shown flanked by "Miss San Francisco" and "Miss Oakland" Governor James Rolph of California also took part in the ceremonies.
