Death Toll Rises As Rescue Efforts Continue

BEICHUAN, CHINA- MAY 16 : A Beichuan quake survivors stand on their destroyed home in2 the quake ravaged town where thousands are dead or missing May 16, 2008 in Beichuan, Sichuan province, China. Nearly 26,000 people remained buried in collapsed buildings from Monday's 7.9 earthquake, and the death toll of almost 40,000 was expected to climb as relief operations spread into the mountains of Sichuan province with well over 100,000 military troops mobilized. Caring for tens of thousands of people made homeless across the disaster zone have stretched thin the government's resources.
