Martha Silva, owner of Nieves Y Paletas La Reyna de Michoacan, enjoys ice cream at her shop along Fourth St. downtown Santa Ana, Wednesday, May 11, 2005. In a city where three of every four people is Latino, saying you are Mexican is not saying enough. Many residents of Santa Ana, an immigrant enclave tucked in affluent Orange County, identify themselves by the Mexican state and city they come from. And many are from Michoacan. Some say as many as one in five Mexicans in Santa Ana hail from the central Mexican state. Evidence is in plain sight. On many streets, businesses are named for Mexican cities and places, mostly in Michoacan. Increasingly, looking at businesses signs here is like reading a Michoacan road map. Lets focus on these two establishments. The idea is that they draw people from Michoacan using their signs / business names. (Photo by Allen J. Schaben/Los Angeles Times via Getty Images)
